40 years after its initial release, the remastered and bonus-track laden Medicine Show collection followed several years of protracted legal battles that finally saw the band regaining the rights to their dark classic, named by The Guardian as one of the Top 40 albums of the rock and roll era. The band released the album on their own Down There Records via an exclusive distribution deal with UK-based Fire Records.

Following successful West and East Coast tours and a four-week run across Europe in 2025, The Dream Syndicate will return to some of their favorite cities and venues along with first-ever performances in Iowa, West Virginia, Kentucky and Athens, Georgia.

“We worked hard and for a long time to get Medicine Show back,” said founding member and bandleader Steve Wynn of The Dream Syndicate. “We were determined to do as many shows as possible to spread the word on this deluxe package. It’s a record that’s always meant a lot to me and was equally loved and misunderstood, so it’s nice to present it in this revisionist and updated fashion.”

The current lineup of the band for this tour will be Wynn, Jason Victor, Mark Walton and Dennis Duck, the same lineup  that launched a reunion in 2012 following a quarter century of inactivity.  The band has also released a quartet of new studio albums in that time and has plans to go into the studio for a new album sometime in 2027.

The 2025 4 x CD deluxe box set of Medicine Show reveals in its unreleased tracks – is that as a live band – between Steve Wynn’s (then) new songs and his animated vocal performances, Karl Precoda’s expanded guitar playing (taking it to outer space), new bassists (Dave Provost, then Mark Walton holding it down (while pumping it up), and Dennis Duck holding it rock steady and the brief, but unique inclusion of Tommy Zvoncheck’s keyboards – the Medicine Show era was the shit! As proof, this set offers for the first time ever, the complete WXRT radio broadcast from the master tape, (the original A&M Live LP was truncated) – plus rehearsal and live tapes of original bassist Kendra Smith – just before she exited the band. A straight release of the original album, remixed and remastered is also available on vinyl. Full Medicine Show reissue details here.

Like many other psychologically complex albums upon their release, Lou’s Berlin, Neil’s On the Beach, Big Star Third, John Lennon’s solo debut Plastic Ono Band, The Who’s Quadrophenia, Dylan’s Blood On The Tracks – it takes a while, sometimes a long while to let it marinate into the psyche of the listener. The Medicine Show has arrived – long overdue.

For those who have read Steve Wynn’s recent memoir I Wouldn’t Say It If It Wasn’t True (Jawbone Press, 2024) – you know about the ‘breakdown’ he suffered while recording this album. The load was heavy, his dreams beyond control; major label debut, intense record producer, novella songs, friction between band members. Yet, the band emerged with a maverick result. This box set proves it.
