LA Wildfire Survivor and Musician Dan Voznick Reclaims His Musical Life Thanks to Instrumental Giving
DAN VOZNICK OF ‘80s POST-PUNK CULT PIONEERS AFTERIMAGE REBUILDS HIS LIFE WITH THE HELP OF INSTRUMENTAL GIVING REGISTRY AFTER LOS ANGELES WILDFIRE
With Voznick’s Family Home, Instruments, Artwork and Almost All Possessions Destroyed, Musical Instrument Registry Helps Him Take The First Step in Rebuilding All That Was Lost
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
LOS ANGELES, CA (THURSDAY AUGUST 7, 2025) – Musician and artist Dan Voznick, best known as the frontman of early ‘80s Los Angeles post-punk band Afterimage, is quietly rebuilding his physical, creative and emotional life with the help of Instrumental Giving, a registry where musicians can list the instruments and gear they lost in the Los Angeles wildfires. Donors can help replace lost instruments and recording and studio gear by donating or purchasing them directly as a tax-deductible gift.
Aside from the instruments Voznick lost in the wildfires this past January, almost everything he personally owned burned along with his family home. With the exception of a car’s worth of items that he and his son evacuated with, literally everything was destroyed. This included all of the artwork Voznick created since his time as a student at UCLA in the late 1970’s, original master recordings of his solo and Afterimage work, and remaining stock of all his music projects, as well as the entirety of his musical instruments. The mental and emotional toll of losing practically everything he owned or created is not lost on Voznick, who was just one of the more than 16,000 homeowners, business owners and renters who suffered terrible losses in both the Pacific Palisades and Altadena wildfires earlier this year.
“The loss of my house, all my music tapes, instruments and music recording gear, as well as years of artwork has been quite a blow,” said Dan Voznick. “But it has also revealed how many people are ready and willing to help. I have been amazed and delighted by the outreach of so many organizations and individuals.”
With help from Instrumental Giving, Dan has received a Gibson Explorer donated by Art Alexakis of Everclear, a vintage Silvertone acoustic parlour size guitar that was upgraded to more modern standards by a luthier, two Shure SM57 mics, some effects pedals and a practice amp. Currently living in temporary housing while his home is being rebuilt, Voznick has come to realize that as bad as things got, he was still lucky: not only to have survived together with his family, but also to have cemented Afterimage’s legacy when he reconnected with Bruce Licher of Independent Project Records (IPR) several years back and they started working on a retrospective reissue of his band’s catalog.
Thankfully, in October 2024, IPR released a 22-track retrospective compilation of the original line-up of Afterimage’s full output entitled Faces to Hide. Both the previously released and unreleased tracks were digitized, mixed and remastered from the original masters long before the wildfire, saving Voznick’s musical archive from being lost permanently and nearly completely.
Additionally, Voznick had sent IPR’s founder Bruce Licher the last remaining copies of some previously out of circulation titles such as 1981’s Fade In 12” EP, and a small number of the two later releases Ghostlight and Radio Sky. They are available for purchase here.
Afterimage interviews, reviews and podcast appearances surrounding Faces to Hide include coverage in outlets such as MOJO, The Big Takeover, Shindig!, MK Ultra, It’s Psychedelic Baby, Post Punk Monk, the (Mike) Watt from Pedro radio program, The Vinyl District, Musoscribe, Outsideleft, and Only Three Lads podcast who all seem to agree that this long-lost, post punk Los Angeles band was ripe for rediscovery.
Direct donations, musical gifts and more for Dan can be provided by visiting the Instrumental Giving website and searching for Dan Voznick’s name for a list of instruments he’s looking to replace.
