Last year – mekons released their first new album in five years titled HORROR. It was also their first album to be released by Fire Records. The mekons have a long history, and we could talk about these two albums all day. So, here’s succinct, yet poignant view. Formed in Leeds U.K. long, long ago in the olden days of ye punke the good ship mekon has sailed the seven seas of musical mishaps releasing 40 or 50 albums and countless singles on one fantastic record label after another. The mekons maintain a collective approach to their art. They are not beholden to the whims and niceties of fashion or even nice sounding tunes – they do what they want to do and mostly have a good time doing it and encourage you to have a good time too. With band members currently spread thinly across the imperial core they are planning to relocate to Greenland in 2027. Back in the day ‘The personal is political’ was their motto and while that still holds true it morphed into ‘The political is political’ Now along with everyone else it’s: ’organize and resist’.
When the mekons went into Elephante Studios in Valencia, Spain in August of ’22 to record what would become HORROR,, they didn’t need to bring their crystal balls … mene mene tekel upharsin … the runes were carved – it was obvious which way the wind was blowing but a more apposite title would be hard to find to describe the live-streamed slaughtered gaslit erased criminal senile perverted present moment. HORROR picks the scabs and wounds of torture climate catastrophe slavery religion people trafficking shadow banking and US and British imperialism and spews it out in a kaleidoscope of mashed up rock n roll pretty tunes and punk. “The market is always right. Bombs keep falling. Stocks are rising. It’s a zero-sum game and you’re definitely losing,” said mekons Jon Langford.
So how did HORRORble (mekons Vs. Tony Maimone In Dub Conference) come about? Well, according to the mekons….We first met Tony Maimone when we opened for Cleveland’s darkest art rockers Pere Ubu on a long, weird tour of the UK tour in 1988. By 1991 he was somehow playing bass for a newly fractured mekons on a longer weirder tour of Europe bashing out songs from the Curse album which never saw the light of day in the US – we’d been freshly dumped by our US label A&M.
In 2015 Tony unleashed the Studio G mobile to record Existentialism the mekons’ instant live album featuring brand new songs. Recorded in one night at a tiny theater in Brooklyn it begged the question “Why should it take longer to record an album than it takes to listen to it?”
While mixing and editing the batch of tunes that became HORROR, we had a feeling they might have some sort of secret double life. So much potential, so many layers and forks in the road, so many split decisions that could’ve gone either way. Tony was the man to get his tools out and see what lurked beneath the hood and make it truly HORRORble.
Benji Webbe the lead singer of UK Dancehall Metal legends Skindred is a resident of Pill, a village down by the docks in Newport, South Wales. “Mudcrawlers” tells the story of Irish economic refugees crossing the sea to the mouth of the river Usk as ballast in the holds of cargo ships. Dumped on the steep muddy banks in the dead of night many died trying to crawl to safety.
A mekonic tactic for songwriting might be to think of a title for a song, in this case “Private Defense Contractor”, agree on it and then sit up very late the night before heading into the recording studio, in this case Elefante Estudios in Valencia, Spain, exploring what such a song might actually consist of. Memories of lies justifying war loom large – the owl of Minerva flies at dusk.
Asteroids are falling in between the blows of the policeman’s truncheon. “Before the Ice Age” is the opening track of HORRORble, Tony Maimone’s reimagining of the mekons’ HORROR album and features a brutally honest commentary on the current state of human affairs whispered into your ear by mekons vocalist Sally Timms.

About the mekons
mekons, formed in 1977 Leeds, England, have an improbable history – a surprising & influential embrace of folk & country music; with occasional forays into the art world. They work collaboratively & collectively with everything credited to the band, never to individuals. Their mind-boggling output blurs the lines between high & low art while remaining bold, unpredictable & true to the punk ethos
