 July 16th Opening Night Features Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band with Sheléa Frazier and Special Guest Jenifer Lewis: A Celebration of 100 Years of Ella Fitzgerald – and the Series Continues with Comedian Maz Jobrani, Vocalist Billy Valentine, the Improvised Shakespeare Company, “Airplane! The Reading!!” and More!

LOS ANGELES, CA (TUESDAY JUNE 13, 2017) – TreePeople (treepeople.org) today announced its 15th summer entertainment series, Once Upon A Canyon Night, running on select weekend nights from July 16 through September 23. Consistently named one of Los Angeles’ best kept secrets, Once Upon A Canyon Night is a rare treat for Angelenos looking for culturally diverse arts, music and children’s entertainment each and every summer. This year, TreePeople is proud to kick off the series with a special feature of Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band with Sheléa Frazier and Special Guest Jenifer Lewis (of the ABC hit series ‘Black-ish’) fronting an 18-piece band celebrating the Great American Songbook including a Special Salute to 100 Years of Ella Fitzgerald thanks to the generous support of the Ella Fitzgerald Foundation. The season continues with great stand-up comedy from Maz Jobrani, vocalist Billy Valentine, a Wildlife Learning Center animal show with Juggler Michael Rayner, a staged reading of Our Town, the Improvised Shakespeare Company, a return of the iconic comedy Airplane! The Reading!! with Robert Forster and much more.

 The summer series is nestled in the woods and under the stars in TreePeople’s beautiful S. Mark Taper Foundation Amphitheatre at its 45-acre headquarters, Coldwater Canyon Park, at the intersection of Coldwater Canyon and Mulholland Drive in Beverly Hills. Seating capacity at the intimate venue is 280, and it features on-site parking and access for the differently-abled, all concealed in the intimate rolling hills overlooking the San Fernando Valley.

S. Mark Taper Foundation Amphitheatre

Dedicated in 1997, this intimate venue hosts theatrical readings, concerts, family & comedy nights, environmental presentations and classes during the summer – all in partnership with the volunteers of Actors Conservatory Ensemble. The amphitheatre was made possible through the generosity of the S. Mark Taper Foundation and several individuals, including Johnny Carson, Candice Bergen, Danny DeVito and Rhea Perlman, Steve Martin and Bonnie Raitt.

 

Actors Conservatory Ensemble (ACE)

ACE returns to co-present this 15th season under the guidance of Jim Hardie, TreePeople’s Director of Park Operations, and Eileen Mack Knight, Artios-award winning casting director. A volunteer driven company, ACE members have invested personally in many venue improvements and have donated thousands of hours of their time to make these past 14 seasons come alive.
